1960s Turquoise Jewelry
Turquoise, one of the first gems ever mined (in Persia, now Iran, over 3000 years ago) was just as much a favourite in the 1960s as in previous decades… perhaps even more so. We find the circular brooch or pin design used over and over again in 1960s turquoise pieces, a nod to the 1960s geometry that followed more free-flowing 1950s floral designs, and became Mod fashion designs reflecting the hard edged geometry of Op Art.
We have selected several pices of 1960s turquoise jewelry for you to enjoy below and on the next pages.

Turquoise, Diamond, Lapis Lazuli, Gold Clip-Brooch, circa 1960
Offered for sale on Heritage Auctions
May 2008 Jewelry & Time Pieces Signature Auction #686 (SOLD)
So here is another of those classic circular radial turquoise pins – this one with lapis lazuli as well as the diamonds to enhance the turquoise. The lapis used here tends towards violet, which adds a reddish touch to warm up the colour combination. The gems are set in gold, and there’s quite a lot of that warm yellow metal showing as texture between the stones. Interesting how it makes the brightness of the diamonds pop in quite a different way than when they’re the only gem to accompany the turquoise.
“The domed clip-brooch features an oval-shaped turquoise cabochon measuring 19.00 x 13.50 mm, enhanced by full-cut diamonds weighing a total of approximately 1.60 carats, surrounded by pear-shaped turquoise and lapis lazuli cabochons, set in textured 18k yellow gold. A double pinstem and catch mechanism completes the reverse. Circa 1960. Gross weight 33.70 grams.
Dimensions: 1-7/8 inches x 1-5/8 inches ” (Text and image credit: Heritage Auctions)
