The Marvellous Collection Of Caroll Petrie, And A Beautiful Brooch …

Christies December 2015 sale in New York, Magnificent Jewels, included many pieces  from the estate of Carroll Petrie. That excellent antique and jewelry blogger Alain Truong reports:

From the late-1950s, Mrs. Petrie established herself as an icon of international society and philanthropy, living and mingling among the elite in Paris, Hong Kong, and New York. Many of the pieces presented in this sale were worn during her meetings with notable figures such as President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, just to name a few. Carroll Petrie patronized many of the great jewelers of the twentieth century, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Jean Schlumberger, and David Webb, all of which are represented in the auction.

Carroll Petrie is pictured below with Joan Rivers. The formal living room below was part of her 10th floor 5th Avenue apartment with a view to Central Park.

Below is one of the pieces featured in Christies sale, a dramatic baroque cultured pearl, diamond, emerald and enamel brooch, by David Webb. As Lot 513. From the Estate of Carroll Petrie it was estimated that the price would reach $20,000-30,000. The price realised was in fact USD 40,000.

The centre cultured baroque pearl connects two sides of an openwork black enamel plaque, trimmed with circular-cut diamonds and cabochon emeralds.  Three drop-shaped cultured baroque pearls suspended from this framework, are mounted in platinum and 18K gold. Signed Webb for David Webb.
