A Victorian Double Clip Brooch In Green, White and Violet…

Those Suffragettes were serious… and as time went on and they were ignored, they became fierce! Even their jewelry was meaningful and waved the flag for the cause  ”Give Women the Vote”. The slogan showed up in acrostic jewelry where the first letter of the colours Green, White and Violet (using gems or paste to represent the colours) were a permanent badge displaying their demands to be given equal rights to choose their representation in Parliament.

This double clip brooch, for sale on 1stDibs at a price of $814.22 AUD, is not made from emeralds, pearls and amethysts or rubies; it’s costume jewelry produced by industrial methods, so that many women could wear the colours, not just those who could afford precious gems.

The workmanship of many of these jewels is excellent, and this double clip is a good example. The paste is a heavy, very transparent flint glass that simulates the fire and brilliance of gemstones because it has relatively high indices of refraction and strong dispersion. As you’ll see below, the clips could be worn separately or together. Here are the images…

Thanks to 1stDibs, a wonderful jewelry source, for information and the images.
