A Turquoise And Diamond Heart
A sweet Edwardian jewel from Glorious Antique Jewelry via Ruby Lane, this heart has a dual function, and can be used as either a pendant or a brooch. An ingeniously attached pin is removable, so that the heart can sit flat when used as a pendant.
In fact there are two hearts, one framed inside the other, adding movement and depth to the piece. The warmth of the turquoise is a lovely counterpoint to the brilliance of the diamonds – which are numerous enough to create a fiery display. The inner heart is centred by a single Old European-cut diamond with surrounding rose-cut and Old European-cut stones. The 15K gold base is topped with silver, a technique used so that the diamonds would have no colour interference from the gold – the use of gold backing being an innovation in the 18th century to prevent silver tarnish, or oxidisation, from rubbing onto the skin or marking clothes..
Made at the turn of the century, this jewel sits very much in time and style, at the pivotal period between Victorian and Edwardian design. As I write, it is for sale at Glorious Antique Jewelry on Ruby Lane at a price of $6,300 USD.
