What a brilliant little gold and topaz brooch from Sotheby’s sale of Michael Wellby’s collection. The gold creates a bright glow, and it’s interesting to see the pink topaz set in gold with no other gems to distract from their warm rosy hue. Another interesting thing to say about it, is that it looks awfully like a 1950s brooch – a prescient goldsmith from the early 1800s perhaps!? Looking at the detail image below though, it’s clear that it’s an early piece, given the closed back settings of the topaz, adding to the glittery gold ambience of this fine brooch, as well as a couple of other Georgian techniques.
