Mostly New Jewelry, But A Few Antique Pieces Will Delight!

Sotheby’s has curated a fabulous collection of jewels for their end of year sale “Important Jewels and Jadeite”. The sale summary briefly references the collection:

Highlights include the coveted diamond, onyx and ruby ‘Panthère’ necklace by Cartier and a fine 8.31carat Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond, alongside a colourful collection of treasured diamonds and gems, complemented by a whimsical selection of signed pieces by renowned brands.

This group of jewels will go under the hammer in just a couple of days from the time of writing, on the 12 October. There are just four (4!) Vintage and Antique pieces and over two hundred pieces of Modern jewelry. In this post we have included a small selection from the sale collection – an early 20th century piece, and a pair of 1930s diamond lapel clips with an Art Deco flavour, as well as a few of the 207 Modern jewels.

Here they are, below and over the page.

1. Lot 9025
A Ruby and Diamond Ring; and a Ruby, Pink Sapphire and Diamond Pendant Necklace, Van Cleef & Arpels
Property of an Important private Collector
Price estimate $12,140 – $17,891
One of the pieces of new jewelry in the collection, the ring is the sweetest little butterfly, created in rubies and diamonds. It’s beautifully colour-matched with the pendant, but apart from that it doesn’t seem particularly to relate to it – unless the circular form of the pendant is meant to represent a flower. Perhaps that’s it.
The ring designed as a butterfly with circular-cut diamond wings, centring upon an oval ruby, to the diamond-set shoulders; and the pendant designed as a double frame suspending a fringe, set with pear-shaped and circular-cut rubies, pink sapphires and diamonds, to the pear-shaped diamond surmount and pink cord, the pink sapphires and rubies weighing approximately 2.80 carats in total; both mounted in 18 karat white gold, ring signed Van Cleef & Arpels and VCA, numbered, with French assay and maker’s marks; pendant signed VCA, numbered, with indistinct French maker’s mark; necklace clasp with Van Cleef & Arpels maker’s marks. Ring size: 4, two cases stamped Van Cleef & Arpels. (Description and image credit: Sotheby’s)

2. Lot 9112
Diamond Aigrette, early 20th Century

Price estimate $12,140 – $16,613USD
This really is a rather wild piece! It’s easy to imagine a gal having great fun whilst wearing this head band with the cheeky feather to accompany the structured openwork diamond-set framework. Like many pieces of this era, it can be worn in a few different ways – as a brooch and as a hairpin as well as an aigrette.
Of garland design, millegrain-set with old-cut diamonds and diamonds of brown tint weighing approximately 5.20 carats in total, mounted in platinum and yellow gold, accompanied by a feather and three fittings for brooch, diadem and hair pin, fitted case stamped Hunt & Roskell Ltd. (Description and image credit: Sotheby’s)
